Gingerhaze is the bestest

Noelle Stevenson, a.k.a. Gingerhaze, is an awesome artist I found on tumblr who makes HILARIOUS comics, awesome illustrations, and so forth. She is pretty well-known for her awesome creation The Broship of the Ring, in which she re-imagines the various Lord of the Rings characters as hipsters, truckers, bikers, frat bros, hippies, etc. It is glorious.

Other franchises she makes drawings and comics about include The Avengers (a lot!), Hunger Games, X-Men: First Class, and more. Here is a selection of some of my favorite works of hers!

Gingerhaze also does this thing called The Pokeymans Project, where she basically has people describe to her what a particular Pokemon looks like and, based only on the description provided, she attempts to draw the Pokemon. Since she has virtually no knowledge of the vast majority of Pokemon, and also since Pokemon are weird as hell, the things she ends up drawing are proposterous and super freaking hilarious. Then she compares her guess-Pokeymans to the real Pokemon and....she has the best reactions ever. It's all just so hysterical and amazing and I love it the mostest better than french toastest.

For example, here is one description she got:

Kricketune: body like an upright cello, balled arm joints with scythes, two pointed crownlike head w/scythes on each point, mustache & 2 feet

Tsuki ni kawatte, oshioki yo!

HOLY CRAP DUDE I am super excited about the Sailor Moon anime reboot! I grew up watching that shit, man. And by "that shit," I mean Sailor Moon and also Dragon Ball Z. Those were like me and my brother's version of Looney Toons or...whatever the hell all the American kids watched, lol. My (Japanese) aunt would record the shows for us and then mail us the VHS tapes. (Ohohoho VHS! Old school, yo.) I bet there is still a stash of the tapes at my house somewhere....

So who else watched Sailor Moon? WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER?! My favorite Guardian/Inner Senshi was Sailor Mars, and my favorite Outer Senshi was Pluto! I even still have a Sailor Pluto doll, lol. I am a cool person.

Anyway, if you do not know anything about Sailor Moon, the following comic will tell you all you need to know. (But not really, lol. It is just hilarious.)

Chopin vs. Liszt

This set of Hark! A Vagrant comics (a series which I previously introduced in this post) made me laugh really hard. As with many of Beaton's comics, they are best appreciated if you have some background on the topic, which in this case is the relationship between and individual personalities of Chopin and Liszt - who are both, of course, famous 19th century pianists and composers. This article gives a general idea of the characterization of these two gents; basically, Chopin is more reserved and his public concerts were infrequent, while Liszt is more showy and gave many more performances. Armed with this vital knowledge, read onward, ho!

(P.S. My favorite one is Razzle Dazzle, hands down. WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM!) 

More recent and equally amazing is Beaton's set of Brown Recluse Spider Man comics. I'm sure most of you know what brown recluse spiders are like. Ugh. But when combined with Spider Man, not ugh! :D

OMGEEZIE, if you like Harry Potter at all you have to check this out.

These. Are. AMAZINGGGGGG. Basically, this artist/comic-writer named Lucy Knisley made these one-page comics summarizing each HP book. AND THEY ARE AWESOME. So far she has done them up through Half-Blood Prince.

So good! And quite accurate/appropriate summaries, I think. My favorite thing in these comics are all the parts with Snape in them. Because he is frickin' hilarious.

Hark! A Vagrant is bomb.

I really like Hark! A Vagrant. What the hell is that, you might say. Well, it is a comic by the brilliant Kate Beaton on a range of topics: most notably, history and literature, but also occasionally American comics, pop culture, and Canada, among others. (P.S. Beaton is Canadian...which is why some comics are about Canada. It all makes sense now) Basically, her comic is hilarious and awesome and you should go read it right now.

One thing that is very interesting about her comics, and which make them much more entertaining and rewarding to read, is that they are oftentimes like little inside jokes. You have to be familiar with the background and characters/figures involved, whether literary, historical, or otherwise, in order to really, fully appreciate the hilarity of the comics. Also, because of the background knowledge needed to get the full comic experience, the comics seem....I don't know, more intelligent? Which is nice. The jokes are still ridiculous though. All in all, I'd say it's a good mix of highbrow and lowbrow. Oh, also! While her art is stylized for a comic genre, Beaton is clearly very skilled, as evidenced by the really accurate drawings of famous people/characters/historical figures.

Anywhoo, here are some of my favorite comics - with links back to the original post which may or may not contain more comics on the same topic! There are a ton because I like Hark! A Vagrant so much that it's hard to pick just a few. I also tried to include comics on an array of topics, as well as not include ones that were too obscure (because some of the history ones can be pretty obscure, though still awesome).
